Frequently Asked Questions

These are the top three questions we’ve been asked recently. For answers to lots more, look out for our FAQ sheets at the Town Hall, Tourist Information Centre, Sports Centre and Library.

Q How will traffic and parking be managed?

A We recognise that this is an issue to be addressed. The feasibility study has estimated that around 300,000 visitors will travel to the centre annually; roughly 27 extra cars per hour on average. Devon County Council’s Highways department has already moved improvements to the A376 to the top of the priority list. In addition, suggestions to help maximise the use of public transport, through rail, bus, cycle and park and ride schemes, are already being considered.

Q Will the area be fenced off and made into private land?

A Absolutely NOT! The area will be sensitively landscaped, and the centre set within that landscape. It will still be accessible by those who walk their dogs, windsurf, kitesurf - and for all the other activities people enjoy there. In fact, activities will be enhanced by the planned cycle path and footpath around the site. We are aware that the regular funfairs and occasional rallies may need to be found a new home, and we will be working with the appropriate authorities to ensure that this happens as close to the town centre as possible.

Q Is this a community-led scheme?

A The Exmouth Visitor Centre scheme has developed from ideas first generated in the town at least as far back as the 1990s. Where is Exmouth Going’ was one local group who saw a future for such a centre in the town. The World Heritage Team consulted local representatives of the community at the beginning of the decade to discover local themes for promoting the site within the Jurassic Gateway towns. Then David and Maggie Conway spoke to the Town Council of their vision for a visitor centre based on the Exe Estuary using webcams to help capture views of the wildlife in the area.Three well attended public meetings encouraged David and others to promote the scheme and develop the themes. This Project Promotion Group was formed of interested and active people from the community all ready to work towards a common goal.
